Dental Exams & Cleanings in Corona, CA

One white girl and one black girl smiling after dental exam, Corona CAWe emphasize preventive dentistry for kids because good oral health in their childhood lays a foundation that will benefit them for a lifetime. The Benefits of Choosing a Pediatric Dentists

As pediatric dentists, we are specifically trained to address the unique needs of each child. No two kids are alike or will respond in the same way to dental visits. Because our specialists have extensive training in behavioral guidance, they use age-appropriate terminology and techniques when approaching your child. Their goal is to provide minimize their stress and help them accept dentistry as a positive thing.

How Early Dental Exams Benefit Your Child

Along with the Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, we recommend that your child has their first dental exam by their first birthday. If your toddler just turned one and has only two or three baby teeth, you may wonder how necessary these appointments are. Here's why.

Catch Issues Early

Bringing your child to see us when their first baby tooth comes in or by age one helps us spot any early dental concerns. It’s much better to tackle issues before they become bigger problems!

Save on Costs

Addressing dental issues early can keep your child healthier and help you avoid higher costs down the road. For example, preventing cavities can help avoid fillings or crowns.

Make It Positive

We always want kids to have a great time at their dental appointments. We recommend keeping a positive attitude so they feel more comfortable. Plus, this helps build their confidence over time.

Build Trust

Those first few visits, especially when we’re just getting to know each other and not doing any work, help your child build a trusting relationship with their pediatric dentist.

Create a Routine

These early visits to the dentist set the stage for a lifelong habit of regular dental checkups and good oral hygiene and habits— which keep your child's smile healthy and bright!

Frequently Asked Questions

Some parents find that their child has a more successful visit if they remain in the waiting room and allow our pediatric dentists and staff to develop a rapport with their child without dividing their attention between the staff and parents. Other parents, especially those who have very young children, find it comforting to both themselves and the child to join in the visit.

You know your child best, and we always appreciate your input as to how the best way to treat your child. On their first visit, we allow parents to accompany their children into our treatment area; for subsequent visits, we will create a plan with you that best suits you and your child's needs.

With a child under the age of three, we generally prefer you that you stay with them during the appointment. If you accompany your child, we ask that you be a supportive but silent observer. This allows our pediatric dentists and highly trained staff the opportunity to communicate directly to your child and guide him or her through the appointment.

In either case, Dr. Shital and Dr. Rakesh will discuss your child's treatment personally with you, and you are always welcome to ask any questions you have about your child's dental care.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child first see a children’s dentist at one year.

For children below the age of three, we refer to their first appointment at our Corona dental office as a Well-Baby Visit. During this appointment, our pediatric dentists will perform an examination and counsel you on brushing, diet, and fluoride. We will also be happy to answer any other questions you have at this time.

At the first visit over the age of three, we will examine and clean your child's teeth, and our children's dentist will determine if we need to take dental x-rays. Doing just these things at a first visit helps maintain a positive experience for your child. If a cavity or other problem is detected, we will work to schedule another appointment to treat it. If your child is in pain, we can perform emergency dental treatment to get them out of pain.

What if my child cries during their visit?

While we strive for every visit to be completely positive, there are times when a child may react with fear or even tears. Be assured that we will do everything possible to comfort them, and we always react with empathy. We will ALWAYS make every effort to end each visit on a positive note and use positive feedback with your child.

If it's time to schedule your child's first dental visit and you live in Corona, Norco, Riverside, Lake Elsinore, or surrounding communities, call us at (951) 898-8845 to get started.

While we strive for every visit to be completely positive, there are times when a child may react with fear or even tears. After all, they are experiencing a new and different environment filled with unfamiliar faces and strange-looking machines.

Patient, Compassionate Care for Kids

If your child cries, rest assured that we will do everything possible to comfort them, and we always react with empathy. As a certified pediatric dentist in Corona, Dr. Lan Nguyen learns more than the clinical aspects of your child’s dental care. He has also studied children’s behavior extensively and is well equipped to adapt to your child’s unique needs.

Preparing for a Dental Visit with Your Child

You can also take steps at home to prepare your child to help them get interested and engaged in the process. We’ve found it’s a good idea to practice some of the things your child will experience during their visit.

Ask them to open and close their mouth and count their teeth. You can also let them “check” your teeth. Be sure to use encouraging words and avoid using terms like “shot” or “needle.”

Most importantly, Dr. Nguyen will always make every effort to end each visit on a positive note and use positive feedback with your child. If you have any concerns about your child’s behavior or have other questions, please don’t hesitate to call us.

We provide comprehensive dentistry for children of all ages and customized treatment plans to meet their needs. However, most dentists recommend bringing your child in every six months for routine cleanings and evaluations.

This schedule allows us to regularly treat problems early and clear away cavity-causing bacteria—all that the toothbrush can’t get rid of.

Your child’s dental care includes:

  • Thorough visual checkup
  • Comparison of oral changes
  • Orthodontic evaluations
  • Monitoring jaw development
  • Monitoring tooth eruption
  • Teeth cleanings
  • Dental sealants, if needed
  • X-rays, if needed
  • Fluoride treatments, when appropriate

We also talk to you about your child’s oral health, sharing our findings and answering your questions.

Preventive dentistry aims to stop potential issues before they start or catch problems in the earliest stages. This helps save time and money in the long run, and it gives your child the healthiest possible start to a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

If your child has an oral health condition, your dentist may customize their treatment schedule to address the issue.

A smiling child with braces

Once your child is comfortably settled in the dental chair, we start the checkup by thoroughly examining their teeth and gums. Our children’s dentist in Corona looks for decay or other issues that they see as being problematic and needing prompt intervention.

Parent education is another helpful service we provide. You will monitor your child’s brushing and flossing for many years to come, and we want to educate you on the most effective oral hygiene practices.

Your Child’s Dental Cleanings

In addition to a dental exam, each six-month visit includes a professional teeth cleaning with one of our friendly dental hygienists. They love working with children of all ages and are very experienced in addressing their needs. Using a light, gentle touch, they remove cavity-causing plaque or tartar that has built up on your child’s teeth and at the gum line.

It's crucial not to skip dental cleanings for your child, so please talk to us if you think your child is hesitant or anxious. We are trained to administer safe, effective sedation for your little one to help your child relax and put them at ease while they are in our care.
