Summer is quickly approaching, and along with it come summer camps! Summer sleepaway camps provide an excellent environment for your child to spread their wings and try new activities while learning how to be comfortable away from home. It builds resilience, strength, and confidence in your child.

Summer Camp Smile Tips

With that said, children need to take care of their teeth and practice good oral hygiene while they're away from home. Here are some tips on preparing your child to be successful in caring for their smile at summer camp.

  • Don't forget to brush and floss — Be sure to pack their toothbrush and floss to make it easy for them to continue their regular routine during summer camp.
  • Drink plenty of water — Hydrating is good for your body and mouth. Keeping hydrated in the summer is essential, and it helps to combat conditions like dry mouth that can contribute to tooth decay and cavities.
  • Bring lip balm — Protect your lips from chapping and dehydration with lip balm. Bonus points if it's an SPF lip balm with sunscreen.
  • Avoid too much sugar — S'mores by the campfire are good, but avoid too much sugar intake.
  • Wear a mouthguard during sports — Older kids who play sports may consider bringing their mouthguard to camp to help avoid tooth injuries if there are going to be sports activities at camp.

Book Your Child's Dental Checkup

Having a checkup during the summer, before or after camps, is a great way to protect your child's smile without them having to miss anything during the school year. Your dentist can help prepare your child for camp and ensure no potential problems or tooth decay are lurking that could become problematic while they're away from home.
