We want to assure you that your child will be comfortable and well cared for. We understand this can be a new and scary experience for you both, and want to let you know what to expect.
It's like an adult dental cleaning, but with a gentle approach so everyone feels at ease.
Steps Taken During Pediatric Dental Cleaning
- Gentle Examination— We go in with a mirror in your child's mouth, looking for any signs of early cavities, bite development, and gum health.
- Plaque and Tartar—Using specialized tools, we carefully remove hardened plaque and tartar, including along the gumline, to help prevent future cavities.
- Polishing—At this step, we use a gentle rotating brush with child-friendly toothpaste. This helps clean the tooth surfaces, remove stains, and make it harder for plaque to accumulate.
- Flossing—We carefully use floss between each tooth to remove food and debris from hard-to-reach places. These are spots a regular brush may not reach.
- Fluoride Treatment—Guardians may opt out of this step, though it is generally advised for most children, since they can be prone to decay. Fluoride strengthens and develops tooth enamel. A fluoride gel or varnish will be applied to your child’s teeth to help prevent cavities and decay.
When Should Your Child First See a Dentist?
For your first visit to our Corona office, we recommend bringing your child in at age one or when their baby teeth appear. This helps them get used to the environment and feel comfortable, making dental cleanings easier.
Preparing your child for a cleaning begins at home. Help them brush and count their teeth, so they become familiar with their mouth.
We also advise avoiding negative words about dental care. Instead of words like needle, shot, or drill, use positive terms like brush your teeth, wiggly tooth, sleep juice, laughing gas, or silly gas. We know it can be nerve-racking, but we take pride in ensuring your child is comfortable with us.
