As the cobwebs are swept away and the jack-o'-lanterns are extinguished, parents across the country face the annual dilemma of protecting their child's oral health after the Halloween sugar rush.

It's no secret that Halloween means bags brimming with sugary treats that can wreak havoc on young teeth. While your intentions to limit their candy consumption are strong, the long-term consequences for your little one's smile can be devastating. So, how can you prevent cavities after Halloween? Keep reading to learn more.

Protecting Your Child’s Oral Health After Halloween

Halloween is an exciting, fun time for you and your family, but too many sweet treats can harm your child’s teeth and gums. Here’s a dental survival guide to keep their mouths healthy and happy:

  • Brush and floss — Make sure your child brushes their teeth for two minutes after eating sugary treats. Also, daily flossing removes plaque from between their teeth.
  • Drink water — When your child drinks water, it rinses their mouth and neutralizes harmful acids that can cause tooth decay.
  • Choose treats wisely — Try to encourage your child to avoid treats that are too hard or sticky, as they can damage their teeth more than softer treats. Chocolate is a better choice because it dissolves quickly and won’t get stuck to your child’s teeth.
  • Limit consumption — Talk to your child about eating smaller amounts of candy and really enjoying the flavors. Moderation is the key to success!
  • Visit your Corona dentistTake your child to the dentist every six months for a routine cleaning and exam. During this visit, the hygienist can remove plaque and tartar from your child's teeth, and if your child has tooth decay or other dental concerns, your dentist can treat them before they worsen.
