Infants often use thumb sucking or a pacifier as a method for self-soothing, and this is entirely normal. However, when it becomes problematic is if the habit is prolonged and continues as they get older. Here's what you should know.

When Thumb-Sucking Becomes an Issue

Your baby's first teeth will arrive during their first year. As they get older and their thumb-sucking habit persists, it can cause their baby teeth to shift forward. This can sometimes alter tooth alignment and may result in an open bite or a pronounced overbite. Prolonged thumb-sucking can also narrow the structure and shape of the upper jaw and roof of the mouth, which can lead to tooth crowding. Altered tongue placement due to thumb sucking can cause difficulties with speech.

The habit can start causing problems as your child gets older, around ages three or four. Parents who are concerned about thumb-sucking should consult with their pediatrician or pediatric dentist to discuss options for successfully managing the habit.

How to Help Your Child Kick the Thumb-Sucking Habit

It is generally agreed that children should stop sucking their thumbs by age four to avoid potential oral health complications. There are some steps parents can take to encourage kids to quit the habit before seeking the help of their physician or dentist.

  • Positive Reinforcement — Offer small rewards for children when they're successful in avoiding thumb-sucking. You can also use a sticker chart to make it fun keeping track of how many days they can go without it.
  • Behavior Modification — Identify triggers for your child's thumb-sucking so you can divert their attention or start an activity to stop the habit.
  • Deterrants — Dental appliances or bitter nail polish can help to remind kids to avoid sucking their thumbs.
