How long do dental sealants last?

Dental sealants are a method the All Smiles Orthodontics and Children's Dentistry team may offer to protect your child's teeth from tooth decay, thereby preventing cavities and potential long-term damage to their teeth and gums. This treatment especially applies to molars and premolars with deep grooves that trap food particles and are susceptible to tooth decay.

A dental sealant is a thin plastic coating we paint into these tiny grooves to smooth the surface and resist bacteria build-up. This treatment is non-invasive and does not require injections or cause any pain. They also may be used with fluoride treatments for a more comprehensive layer of protection for your kid's teeth.

How We Apply Dental Sealants

The process begins with a thorough cleaning by one of our hygienists, so the teeth to be sealed are entirely free of plaque. Then we roughen up their tooth's surface to create a stronger bond between the sealant and your child's tooth enamel. Next, we apply the sealant by painting an even coat on all tooth reachable tooth surfaces, and then we harden it with a special curing light.

How well your child brushes and flosses, especially those back teeth, will influence the lifetime of your dental sealant treatment. On average, this layer of protection may last from one year or even several years, and it may be reapplied when worn.
